Mexican immigrants recently deported from the United States back to their home country often find the return difficult. But as Valeria Leon reports from Mexico City, many of them have descended on a neighborhood of the capital known as Little L.A. where they have found a home away from home. Faced with discrimination in their native Mexico, after being deported from the United States, deportees felt compelled to find a place where they could establish their own community. Using their bilingual skills, many have found jobs in call centers in the centrally located neighborhood they named “Little L.A.”, which now has the highest concentration of Mexican citizens forcibly removed from the U.S.   https://youtu.be/0wWVxi8GY3c My story for TRT World https://www.trtworld.com/life/mexican-immigrants-deported-home-from-the-us-adjust-to-life-in-little-la-23415

Teen pregnancy is a growing problem in Mexico, which ranks number one for teen pregnancies among the 34 member countries of the Organization for Economic Co-operation and Development. The Mexican government says it’s taken steps to help tackle the high number of young pregnancies and mothers, But it continues to rise, And only a few manage to find the kind of support that Casa de las Mercedes offers. In Mexico, more than 90 percent of teenage and pre-teen mothers do not go to school.  Girls who enter into early pregnancy become pregnant at an early age are excluded from both the classroom and higher paying and find it hard to get jobs with…

Mexico’s willingness to accept US asylum seekers is causing concern among officials in Mexican border cities who are already struggling to deal with thousands of Central American migrants. Mexico, meanwhile, is struggling to say how it will house and protect what could become tens of thousands of Central American migrants who might wind up in its cities along the border with the United States. It is clearly not ready to shelter so many. https://youtu.be/nF6PvQc9vvo Mexico’s Government informed migrants seeking asylum at the U.S. border will receive humanitarian visas to stay in Mexico while they wait for a resolution. But this could take years. Reporting Live from Mexico City for TRT WORLD, December 2018.

Surrounded by thousands of supporters on the main square the night he won the presidential election, 64-year-old Andres Manuel Lopez Obrador- or AMLO as he is known- promised not to disappoint his supporters after winning the presidential elections by the highest margin of the past two decades. His previous bids for president in 2006 and 2012, first with the Party of the Democratic Revolution (PRD) and then a coalition of the Labour Party (PT) and the Citizens’ Movement (MC) were both unsuccessful. The 2006 campaign was lost to Felipe Calderon of the right-wing National Action Party (PAN) by less than one percent of the vote and was marked by biter accusations of fraud. But in the wake of his 2012 loss by over seven percentage points to the traditionalist PRI party candidate, Enrique Peña Nieto, AMLO became disillusioned with party in-fighting, left the PRD and officially established the left-wing anti-establishment…

Mexico, more than a tourism destination, is a gastronomic paradise. “Don’t visit the pyramids, dive into the richness of flavor of their popular dishes”, is the advice a foreigner gives to a fellow european countryman who is about to visit the country. I went with Rajan along some of Mexico City’s markets and, among pungent smells of boiling barbacoa and melted cheese, he described his experience in the country using food: “For a mexican, everything revolves around food. The get-togethers, the customs, the parties, it all becomes a part of the culinary experience.” As I observed with distaste the bubbling of oil cooking the chicharrón, he smiled before what he considered to be an elixir. “The barbacoa is the best I’ve ever tasted”, he told the street vendor from State of Mexico, who with a fleeting smile offered the european a taco. It was gone in two bites. Worldwide culinary…

It’s a cloudy day and the seagulls flutter over the three-hundred-mile border that separates Mexico and the United States. The birds have a favorite place to lookout: the iron wall that ends in the ocean, in the area referred to as Las Playas de Tijuana. On the American side, three mounted men can be seen at a distance. The moment the sign “No trespassing” becomes visible they turn around and return to the naval town. On the other hand, on the Mexican side, there are live music groups playing banda next to the border. There’s so much noise from the adjoining restaurant that it is difficult to hold a conversation. The musicians wear colorful outfits and play next to a sign that hangs in the middle of the border wall. It reads: “We do care”, this meant as this is intended to be a reaction to the controversial message scrawled…

Five centuries after the arrival of Cristopher Columbus, Santo Domingo is still capital of a New World. Calle de las Damas—the first street in America— is still located in Santo Domingo’s historical center. Its Colonial-style tiling and the sun than seems to float suspended in the sky are reminiscent of affluent women who walked every afternoon among its mansions and under the shadow of great fortresses. Also stones, palm trees, and balconies seem to preserve the sound of the carriages that gave color to the city when the continent was still a dream under construction and the new colony, a proud reflection of its European heritage. On the western side of Plaza de España and with the Ozama river running behind it towards the Caribbean waters, Columbus’ Castle holds among its walls a history of greatness which began when it was home to Diego, son of Cristopher Columbus and María de Toledo, his wife, before becoming a prison, and during the 18th century, making its time as…
